Does anyone know what’s happened to Stockport Motorcycle Centre. I went past on Friday at 4.10pm and the shutters were down. I rang the telephone number and it’s not accepting calls. He had a second hand bike that I wanted to look at?

I popped in for a couple of bits about 10 days ago and the guy that runs it looked really glum, seems a shame as they were always very helpful. Lets hope someone else sets up there, I always saw it as a flagship bike shop for Stockport.

Just to add my thoughts.

I have been a regular customer of  theirs for 12 years, and have never trusted anyone else to touch any of my bikes.

Guess I knew the guys better than most at SMC, being mates with a couple of them and prev being a sponsor of Christian Elkin who used to work there.

They had skill levels way above most dealers in that one of the guys builds engines for bikes in British Super stock, they actually knew how to properly set up suspension, and of course they could tune the nuts off a stock motor!

They also attended our PMC meet last Jan.

Afraid they have gone under…………never mind hey, they have only been there for about 40 years!!!

Sign of the times I think in that the only survivor's in the bike game will be the big boys who can sell bikes at COST and then get their money via their dealer bonus. (Opps did I say that?). (Pile em high - Stuff service - Sell um cheap). 100 mile trip to get your bike serviced anyone? They did'nt always get it right (Who does?), but what I can say is that as a dealership they did always try and do the right thing by their customers. (Having spent a lot of time there I knew the conversations that went on behind the scenes…………..and apart from the odd T**t that wandered in who would be given the cold shoulder, they always did their best for people).

Try chatting away to the Dyno guy in the Dyno room as your bike is being hammered in any other dealer!

Or being told by anothet dealer………………don't waste your £300 on that bit for your bike as it won't make any difference!

I remember once they did the valves on a Honda VFR800 of mine, which is a mega complex job with it being a V4. Honda dealer quoted me £480………..they did it for £280. (6 valves needed adjusting).

Proper bike shop…………….not a version of a car shop……………people with oil under their finger nails!

In a way I guess when things like this happen we are all to blame, in that local business's are closing down all the time due to reduced profits as BIG business moves in. (Eg buy your Kawasaki for £200 less from a BIG dealer = Closed local dealer).

In my opinion a very sad loss to local bikers I'm afraid.

I'll second that retoric Hamish

My ZX-7R came from there and the day I picked it up and traded a GS500 & GS125 against it, I also spotted my first bike…a TZR 125 in their yard as well. Every bike Id ever owned was in their yard at the same time. They have since dynoed, tuned and supplied bit for my Kwak with the best friendliest and most honest service Ive had anywhere. Real shame its gone.
